Privilege and Resources
Using What You’ve Got to Make a Difference
Let’s have a honest chat about something important – using your privilege and resources to make the world a better place. Unfortunately the word “privilege” can be a bit loaded. We all have certain advantages in life, whether it’s our education, the size of our bank account, or the connections we’ve got. The key is recognising these privileges and figuring out how we can leverage them to create positive change.
Think about it this way – if you’re fortunate enough to have a decent education, a stable job, or a comfy home, you’ve already got a leg up on a lot of folks out there. You’ve got resources, whether it’s time, money, or influence, that you can use to support causes you care about. Maybe that means volunteering at a local charity, donating to an important organisation, or using your voice to advocate for important issues.
The way Making A Difference sees it, being “cause-conscious” isn’t about feeling guilty or ashamed of your privilege. It’s about using what you’ve got to make a real difference. Sure, it might feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but trust us, there’s no better feeling than knowing you’re using your power and platform for good.
We are not saying you must quit your job and become a full-time activist (unless that’s what makes you tick, in which case, go for it!). Even small, consistent actions can have a big impact. Maybe you could start by researching ethical brands to support, or finding ways to reduce your carbon footprint. This could even start just by having an honest conversations with your friends about important issues or a good cause.
The bottom line is, we all have a responsibility to use our privilege and resources to create a more just, equitable world. It’s not always easy, but it’s so worth it. Having privilege doesn’t mean you’re a bad person, or that you’ve done anything wrong. Let’s get out there and start making a difference!
